Lesson 7 - Digitizing a Logo

Once we have Digitizer 10000, eventually we will be asked to digitize a logo. In this lesson, we will go through the steps needed to accomplish creating logo embroidery.

We are supplying the bitmap for the logo. To download it, click with your right mouse button on this link. Then choose "save target as" and save it in a folder that you will be able to access to insert it into Digitizer.

To bring it into Digitizer,

Image
The Open dialog box will appear.
Image
Click Dave's Logo once to preview. Click Open to insert it on to the design screen.

The logo has come on to the screen in selected mode, having eight black anchor points around it. This logo is very small, so we will increase its size.

Click the Object Details icon.
Image
The Object Details dialog box will appear. There is only one tab available, Dimensions.
Image
Increase the Width and Height percentage to 150%. Click OK.

Click the Zoom In icon once to double the zoom percentage in the zoom box.
Image
Often, when logos are scanned, they are not perfectly straight. This logo is slightly off.

Click once on the logo to put it into rotate mode. The black anchor points will become hollow, and diamonds will appear at the center top and center bottom.

Slide your cursor over the upper right box until it becomes a double arrow. Click on the box and drag it slightly up to straighten the logo.

Our plan for this logo is the word "AUTO" and the wrench will be open on a background of embroidery to show the shirt behind it. The words "DAVE'S" and "REPAIR" will be embroidery on an open background. We will generate the embroidery in red thread so we will be able to see the black logo behind it easier. We'll change it to black at the end.

We will begin with the background behind the word "AUTO."

Click the Parallel Fill: Rectangle icon.
Image
Set the underlay to weave because we are using a weave fill.

Click the Object Details icon.
Image
Click the Underlay tab. Click the down arrow in the Stitch Type box. Click Weave.
Image
Click OK.

Click a point to the left of the background close to the edge and pull out a rectangle to cover the background. When you lift your finger from the mouse, the background will generate.
Image
Image
The next step is to use the Cut Hole tool to cut out the embroidery for the word.

Click the Select icon. The background will select.

Click the Zoom In icon.

Click the Cut Hole icon. The background will return to the red color.
Image
Beginning with the A, click points around the letter. Don't connect the points.
Image
Press the Enter key to connect the points. Press the Enter key a second time to generate the hole.
Image
We will continue with the "U."

Click the Select icon.

Click the Cut Hole tool.

Click points around the "U."
Image
Press Enter to connect the first and last point. Press Enter to cut the hole.

For the "T,"
Click the Select icon.

Click the Cut Hole tool.

Click points around the "T."
Image
Press Enter to connect the first and last points. Press Enter to cut the hole.

Finally, the "O."

Click the Select icon.

Click the Cut Hole tool.

Click points around the "O."
Image
Press Enter to connect the first and last points. Press Enter to cut the hole.

The next step is to add embroidery in the "A" and the "O." When we look at the rectangle background, we see that the "maze box," the current stitch indicator, is at the upper right. To minimize hoop movement, we'll add embroidery to the "O" first.

Click the Parallel Fill tool.
Image
Click points around the center of the "O."
Image
Press the Enter key to generate the embroidery.
Image
Click points to fill in the "A."
Image
The next step in the logo is to create the background for the wrench.

Click the Parallel Fill: Rectangle tool.

Click the Object Details icon. Set the underlay to weave.

Create a background as you did for the word "AUTO."
Image
To cut out the wrench,
Click the Select icon.
Click the Cut Hole tool.
Click points around the wrench.
Image
Press the Enter key to connect the first and last point. Press the Enter key to generate the hole.
Image
The next step is to create a border around the logo. We can start the border where the "maze box" is located to eliminate any hoop swing.

To see the entire design for the border, change the zoom percentage to 175. Press Enter to set the percentage.

Click the Border tool.

Beginning at the "maze box", click points around the logo. At the end of the border, overlap the last point over the first point approximately 1/8 of an inch. (If your grid is set to 1/2 inch boxes, you should be able to approximate 1/8 of an inch without having to measure.)

The last thing to do is add lettering to the logo. When there is no font that matches the graphic font, the lettering must be digitized, letter by letter. We are lucky in that we have a font in Digitizer 10000, Derbyshire, which is very close to the font used in the logo. The differences are so slight, that we can use it and keep the same look.

Click the Lettering tool.
Image
Select the Derbyshire font.

Change the size to 11.5.

Type "DAVE'S".

Click OK.

Click under the D to generate the lettering.
Image
The spacing of the lettering does not match exactly. We can correct this by using the Reshaping tool.

Click the Reshaping tool.
Image
The "D" and the "A" are placed correctly. The first letter we need to move is the "V."

Slide your cursor over the diamond in the center of the "V." It will become a quadruple arrow. Click the diamond and move the "V" over the "V" in the graphic.
Image

Image
Move the "E", the apostrophe, and the "S" into position. (Note that the diamond for the apostrophe is below it.)
Image
Click the Stop icon OR press the Esc key to stop reshaping.

Click the Lettering icon to generate the lettering for "REPAIR". Keep the size at 11.5.
Image
Click the Reshape tool. Position the letters to match the graphic.
Image
Stop the reshaping.
Image
The last step to do with the logo is to change the color to black.

Press the Ctrl key on your keyboard and at the same time press the letter "A" key. The entire design will become selected.

Click the Thread icon.
Image
Click #002 Black. Deselect by clicking anywhere on the design screen except on the embroidery.

Click the Display Image icon to turn off the graphic.
Image
Click the Visualizer icon.

The logo is completed, but just like any embroidery design you create, you must sew it out to see how it looks. Always test sew a logo on the type of fabric you are planning to sew on. Only then can you tell if changes need to be made.

Many commercial embroiderers feel that digitizing is only 50% of the work in creating an embroidery design. The rest of the work for a design comes from test sewing and editing to perfect it.
