Lesson 12 - Digitizing a Realistic Looking Leaf
We will continue to use the graphic of the Flower.
Click the Undo icon until the "maze box" is back at the center of the grid and no embroidery is generated.

Most leaves have veins in the center that run from stem to tip, which divides the leaf in two parts. We can approximate that look by adding a stem to the leaf and digitizing the leaf in two parts.
To add a stem to the leaf, we need to touch up the picture. To touch up the picture, the picture needs to be selected.
Click the Select icon.
Click on the graphic image. Anchor points will appear around the picture.

The Touch Up dialog box will appear. It will determine which graphic programs you have on your system. Click the program you would like to access (we will use Microsoft Paint, which comes with your Windows operating system) and click OK.

The graphic will appear on the design window of MS Paint.
In order to see the leaf as well as possible, you can enlarge the design by clicking View, Zoom, Large Size.

Use the scroll bars to see as much of the leaf as you can.
To draw the stem on the leaf, click the pencil on the left toolbar. Use the pencil to draw the stem. Don't be concerned if it isn't perfectly straight. It will just be a guide for you when you digitize.

When you are finished drawing the stem, click the "X" in the upper right to close the MS Paint program.
The altered image will now appear on the Digitizer design screen.
We will use the Turning Angle tool and the Border tool to digitize the leaf.
Click the Turning Angle icon.

Click the Thread icon. Choose a green color, your preference.
Click the Object Details icon.
Click the Fill Stitch tab. Click Satin Fill.

Click OK.
We are going to digitize the left side of the leaf, the right side of the leaf, and then the stem. We want the sewing to conclude at the flower stem so we can walk up the stem to the next leaf. To accomplish this, we will sew in this order:
1. Left side tip to stem
2. Right side stem to tip
3. Center stem from tip to stem
Beginning at the tip, click reference points along the left side between the left edge of the leaf and the stem.
Try to keep the clicks along the middle as straight as possible. Use the drawn line as a guide.

Press the Enter key to generate the embroidery object.
Beginning at the stem, click reference points along the right side between the right edge of the leaf and the tip.

Press the Enter key to generate the embroidery object.
Click the Border icon.

Click the Object Details icon.
Click the Line Stitch tab.

Click Satin Line. Decrease the Width to .02 inches.
Click OK.
Click a line down the center of the leaf from the tip to the stem.

Press the Enter key to generate the embroidery object.
