Lesson 3 - Manual Underlay
Digitizer 10000 can automatically generate one of four underlay types per object. One underlay type is usually sufficient, but every so often the need arises for a combination of underlay types.
When more than one underlay type is required, one of the types must be created manually. Let Digitizer 10000 create the more complex type while you create the easier one.
Let's digitize a square to practice this technique.
Click the Parallel Fill: Rectangle icon.

Click a point on the design screen and drag a square.

Magnify the square to see the underlay, which is the default zig-zag underlay.

Zig-zag is a poor underlay for any object that is weave stitch. Zig-zag is generated in the same angle as the weave fill, which only adds to embroidery contraction. Objects with weave fill must have weave underlay, which is perpendicular to the weave stitch angle. Weave underlay will create a crosshatch effect, which helps to stabilize the embroidery.
Click the Select icon.

Click the Object Details icon.

Click the Underlay tab.

Click the down arrow in the Stitch Type box. Click Weave. Click OK.

If this square was going to be sewn over a background of embroidery or perhaps on a mushy sweater knit, we also need to have an edge run underlay.
Reduce magnification so you can see the entire square on the design screen.
Click the Run Line icon.

Click reference points to create a run line along the edge of the square. Make sure your run line is inside the square. Press the Enter key to generate the underlay.

We now need to resequence the edge run so it sews first. Click the Resequence icon.

The Resequence dialog box will appear. Because the edge run underlay is the same color as the square, we will resequence by object.
Click the Objects radio button. Click the Run Line object to highlight it. Click the Top button to move it to the beginning of the sequence. Click OK.

Your square now has two types of underlay.
The square was an easy shape to add edge run underlay. If your object is more complex, it might be easier to let Digitizer10000 create the edge run underlay, while you manually add a weave type underlay.

The Open dialog box will appear. Click Btflyside to highlight it. Click Open.

Click the Image Preparation icon.

The Image Preparation dialog box will appear. Change the number in the "Reduce to:" box to 6 to make sure that all colors in the bitmap show in the embroidery.
Click OK

Click the Click-to-Design icon.

The Click-to-Design dialog box will appear. Click the Auto Select radio button. Click the white box to omit the white color from digitizing.

Click OK to digitize the bitmap.
The embroidery will generate in selected mode. Click on the design screen, but off the embroidery to deselect.
Click on the gray area to select it.

The gray area generated with the default zig-zag underlay, which we will have to change. Since we want both weave underlay and edge run underlay, we need to decide which one to generate and which one to digitize manually.
This is a complex shape. Digitizer 10000 will generate edge run underlay easily with the correct distance from the edge. We may not be as accurate if we attempt to manually do edge run underlay.
Click the Object Details icon.

Click the Underlay tab. Click the down arrow in the Stitch Type box and click Edge Run.

Click OK
Deselect the gray area.
Magnify the gray area so you can see it clearly on the design screen.
Click the Run Line icon.

Click the Thread icon. Click 221 Gray.

When we generate an embroidery using Click-to-Design, weave fills are horizontal at 0 degrees. We will generate our weave underlay perpendicular to 0 degrees, which is 180 degrees.
Click reference points up and down through the gray area.

Press the Enter key to generate the underlay.
Click the Resequence icon.

Click the Objects radio button.
Slide the side bar down to the last object.
Click the last object, the weave underlay, to highlight it.

Click the Up button until the weave underlay comes before the gray weave object.

Click OK.
When you need to have more than one underlay per object, have Digitizer 10000 generate the more complex underlay. Add the second, easier underlay manually.
