The Canoe purse is a creative design that you will enjoy making. It can be made in less than an hour using any Janome sewing machine. Combining complimentary fabrics will provide your purse with a distinct look!
Janome Supplies Required
- Any Janome machine
- 1/4 foot O
- Satin Stitch foot F
- Sliding Buttonhole foot R
- Blue Tip needle 75/11
Fabric and Notions Required
- 1/2 yd. fashion fabric
- 1/3 yd. lining fabric
- 1/3 yd. cotton batting
- Two 21" lengths of 3/4" elastic
- Fusible interfacing
- All purpose thread
- Button
- Spray Adhesive
- Pinking shears
- Fabric marking pen
- Ruler
Fabric Preparation:
- Cut two 11" x 16" rectangles from the fashion fabric.
- Cut two 11" x 16" rectangles from the lining fabric.
- Cut two 11" x 16" rectangles from the batting.
- Cut two 3" x 20" strips from the fashion fabric for the straps.
- Cut one 5" square from the fashion fabric for the button flap.
- Cut one 5" square from the lining fabric for the button flap.
- Fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of the both lining rectangles.
- Fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of the 5" lining square for the button flap.
- Using the pattern piece provided, trace onto interfacing of both lining rectangles.
Instructions:
- Layer one set of rectangles, batting, fashion fabric(right side up) and lining fabric (wrong side up). Secure with pins.
Hint: You may want to adhere the batting to the fashion fabric with temporary spray adhesive.
- Repeat for remaining rectangles.
- Set up the sewing machine for ordinary sewing.
- Select Straight stitch #1.
- Attach the Satin Stitch foot F.
- Leave a 3" opening on the straight edge, then stitch on the marked lines from the pattern for each section.
- Press seam as sewn.
- Trim close to the stitching line with the Pinking shears.
- Turn right side out. Press again.
- Measure down 5" from the straight edge on both pieces. Mark with the fabric pen.
- With the lining sides "UP", overlap the two sections to the 5" mark. Secure with pins.
Note: the diagram is two colors to show the two different sections, it is not to indicate wrong or right sides.
- Adjust the stitch length to 2.4.
- Edge-stitch where the curved sections overlap on each side.
- Fold purse in half, lining sides together. Secure the sides with pins. The sides must be matched up evenly.
- Mark a line 2 1/4" in from the edges.
- Sew on the marked lines.
- Attach the 1/4" Seam foot O.
- Adjust stitch length to 2.0.
- Fold one of the strap pieces half lengthwise, right sides together.
- Sew down the long raw edge.
- Repeat for other strap.
- Turn straps right side out. Press.
- Attach the Satin Stitch foot F.
- Place the two 5" squares for the button flap, right sides together.
- Place the button flap pattern piece on the wrong side of the lining square. Trace the pattern.
- Stitch on the lines. Leave a 2" opening on the long straight edge for turning.
- Press. Turn right side out.
- Attach the Buttonhole foot R.
- Place button in the Buttonhole foot R.
- Stitch buttonhole on the pointed section of the button flap.
- Insert the elastic pieces into the straps. Baste ends.
- Place the raw end of the strap 1/2" from the side seam and about 1" down from the straight edge. Secure with pins.
- Repeat for opposite side.
- Repeat for the other strap.
- Place the buttonhole flap about 1/2" down from the straight edge on the right side of the purse. (Buttonhole flap lining to fashion fabric of the purse.) Secure with pins.
- Fold back the four flaps. Secure with pins.
- Attach the Satin Stitch foot F.
- Select Straight Stitch #1. Adjust the length to 2.6.
- Using the right side of the foot as a guide, topstitch around the top of the purse being sure to catch the straps, buttonhole flap and the four sides that were folded back.
Note: If desired, you may hand baste to avoid using pins.
- Using 6/8" seam allowance, topstitch again. If necessary, secure the buttonhole flap with a short row of stitches.
- Press flaps.
- Sew on button.
