Janome Supplies Required:
-Memory Craft 11000 Special Edition
-SQ Hoop
-1/4 Inch Seam Foot
-Embroidery Foot
-Walking Foot
Fabric and Notions Required:
-1/3 yd. solid red fabric
-1/3yd. solid green fabric
-3/4 yd. Christmas print fabric
-2/3 yd. Pellon fusible thermolan plus
-1/2 yd. Pellon fusible fleece
-Rotary cutting supplies
-1 spool 40 wt. decorative thread in white or cream, to coordinate with Christmas print.
-Embroidery needle size 80/12 or 90/14, depending upon the decorative thread used.
-Temporary basting spray
Cutting Instructions:
Cut 2 - 12" blocks from the red and 2 - 12" blocks from the green.
(These blocks will be trimmed to 7" x 7" once the quilting in each has been completed.)
Cut 2 - 2" x 13½" strips of Christmas print.
Cut 2 - 2" x 16½" strips of Christmas print.
Cut 1 -16½" block of Christmas print for backing.
Cut 4 - 11" blocks of Pellon fusible thermolan plus.
Cut 2 - 1¾" x 13½" strips of Pellon fusible thermolan plus.
Cut 2 - 1¾" x 16½" strips of Pellon fusible thermolan plus.
Cut 1 -16½" block of Pellon fusible fleece.
Back the blocks with thermolan plus:
Following manufacturers instructions, fuse a centered 11" block of thermolan plus to the wrong side of each red and green block.
Fuse the strips of thermolan plus the wrong side of the appropriate print strips. (There will be ¼" free on one edge for the seam.)
Fuse the 16½" block of fusible fleece to the wrong side of the backing block.
Quilting the motifs in the blocks:
Choose stippling design #9 with the stippling and border. On the edit screen, change the selected hoop from the AQ Hoop to the SQ Hoop. Decrease in size to 97% and rotate 45 degrees. Keep the motif centered on the grid.
Choose stippling design #17. Increase in size 105%. Situate the motif to be in the top right corner outside the 9 motif. (Lining up about 8 grid squares out from the center.) Duplicate piece #17 and flip horizontally – place this piece on the top left corner of the motif. Again duplicate the first #17 piece, flip it vertically and put it on the bottom right corner of the motif. Duplicate that, flip horizontally and put it on the bottom left corner of the motif.
Hoop each block and stitch the design.
(I found that I liked to stop the machine a stitch or two before it finishes each of the corner stippling designs, then pull the threads to the top so I could thread them to the underside, tie and bury them in the batting.)
Constructing the Wallhanging:
1. Use a square ruler and trim each red and green block to 7" square.
2. With the ¼" foot stitch together with a ¼" seam 2 sets of one red block and one green block.
3. Press seam open. Carefully trim some of the excess thermolan from the seam.
4. Stitch the two strips together, alternating the green and red.
5. Again press seam open and trim some of the excess thermolan from the seam.
6. Sew the shorter strips to the top and bottom edges, press seams open and trim excess thermolan.
7. Sew the longer strips to the sides. Press seams open and trim excess thermolan.
8. Layer together the backing block with the fleece side up and the table mat top with the thermolan side down. Use temporary basting spray to hold the layers together.
9. Using the walking foot, stitch in the ditch between the blocks and between the blocks and the border.
10. Bind the wallhanging.
