Embroidering the Shawl:
Inside Information: What is a Pashmina shawl? These beautiful silky soft shawls have become a fashion staple with their beautiful drape and exquisite colours. Pashmina is the finest and softest fiber found in nature, and comes from the undercoat of a rare Himalayan goat. Pashmina shawls come in a variety of weights and quality and the wool is occasionally blended with silk for added strength and sheen. For this project, look for a medium weight shawl in a silk and Pashmina blend.
1. Download the three Trellis embroidery designs from the Janome website: Main Trellis Design, Bottom Trellis Design, and Top Trellis Design.
2. Send the designs to the MC11000, using direct computer link or a USB memory stick or ATA PC card.
3. Fold the shawl into thirds lengthwise. Lightly press a crease to mark the panels. The Trellis embroidery designs connect to make a continuous line of embroidery. There are three lines of embroidery on the shawl, each one centered on a panel.
4. Mark the shawl for embroidery placement, using an air soluble marking pen. Fold the shawl in half to find the center, and place a mark at the center of the center panel. Unfold the scarf, and make 5 additional marks every 7” from the center to one end of the scarf. Repeat for the other end. There will be a total of 11 marks for the center panel. For each side panel, place 10 placement marks, off set from the marks for the center panel. See Figure 1 below:

5. Set up the MC11000 for Professional Style Embroidery, placing Janome Acrylic Embroidery thread in the bobbin, as well as in the needle. This will make the embroidery reversible once the stabilizer is removed.
6. Insert PC Design Card 1017, White Lilies collection.
7. Press Edit,>Open File. Select Trellis. The embroidery design will appear on the Edit Screen.
8. Press the PC Design Card tab, and select Design 15. The embroidery design will appear in
the center of the Edit screen.
9. Press the Duplicate key 3 times. The designs will appear one on top of the other, in the
center of the screen. Move each design away from the center to create a pleasing arrangement.

10. Press the Color Sort key . This will minimize the color changes for the small flower designs. The color sorting window will appear. The embroidery designs that appear in color are the designs to be combined on that screen. In this case, the Trellis design is in color. Press the forward arrow for the next window. In this window, the flowers are seen in color, and the Trellis design is grayed out. Press OK to color sort the flower designs.

11. The embroidery design will appear on the Ready to Sew screen. Press Edit to return to the Edit screen.
12. Press Save File, and save the design to the Built-In memory. Press Rename, and rename the file Flowers. Press OK. Press OK to save the design.
13. Press OK to send the completed design to the Ready to Sew screen.
14. Hoop heat away stabilizer in the Square Hoop.
15. Place the hoop on the machine.
16. Start the first line of embroidery on the center panel of the shawl, starting the embroidery at one end and working toward the other end of the shawl.
17. Place the shawl over the hoop with the placement mark centered under the needle. Lower the foot.
18. Press the Baste key. The confirmation window will appear. Press OK to start the basting stitch. This will secure the fabric to the hoop and stabilizer, a perfect technique for delicate fabrics that might be damaged by hooping.

19. Embroider the design. When the design is complete, remove from hoop, and cut away the excess stabilizer.
Inside Information: The Trellis designs created for this project connect at the stem. The ‘repeat’ for the design is 7”. The design fills the 8” Square Hoop, and has very little room for adjusting the position of the design. This is a perfect situation for using the Clothsetter Extension Table available for the MC11000. Hoop the stabilizer as directed, but attach the hoop to the Clothsetter Extension Table. Place the shawl over the hoop, and lower the arm of the Clothsetter. Shift the fabric until the placement marks align, and pin baste in place. Place the hooped fabric onto the MC11000, and use the Baste function to secure the fabric to the hoop. Remove the pins. 20. Embroider the remaining designs for the center panel, following the same hooping technique.
21. Turn the shawl 180 degrees, and embroider the two side panels.
22. Embroider a TrellisTop and a TrellisBottom to complete each row of embroidery on the two outside panels. These designs may be combined with a Trellis design in the MacroHoop using the following technique: (See the Diagrams below).
• Press the Edit tab. Select the MacroHoop.
• Open the combined Trellis design previously saved as Flowers. The design will appear in the center of the hoop. Notice that the flowers are in color, but the Trellis background is grayed out.
• To move the design into Hoop Position 1, press the Group key. Move the grouped design to the top of the MacroHoop, using the Jog keys.
• Open TrellisBottom. The design will appear on the screen, but notice that it is not centered. The design was created in an off center position so that it would line up with the Trellis design. Move the design using the Jog keys so that the design connects at the lower stem.
• Create a second MacroHoop design with Flowers placed in Hoop Position 2, and the TrellisTop design positioned above the Flower design.

23. When the embroidery is complete, remove the heat away stabilizer according to the manufacturer’s instructions. When all stabilizer is removed, press the shawl lightly using a steam iron on a silk setting.
Inside Information: Short on time? Use the Trellis designs to create a border for each end of a Pashmina shawl, and add your favorite floral designs from any of Janome’s beautiful design collections. Add beads to the fringe. A perfect accessory to add to your wardrobe! Enjoy!
