Sew up these placemats and napkins in any colorful fabric and you'll have the best looking table setting in your whole house ;)

We love this setting created by Sue Beevers.  Sue used the earth and sky colored fabric of greens and blues to create settings that give a garden appeal to any tea-time.

Placemat Directions (for one placemat):
1. Sew a 2” x 4 1/2” White Fabric rectangle to a 4 ½” x 5” Green Leaf Fabric rectangle. Press. Repeat to create four White/Green Leaf pieces.

2. Sew a 4” x 4 ½” Snail Fabric rectangle to either side of a 2” x 4 ½” Turquoise Leaf Fabric Rectangle. Press. Repeat to yield two Snail/Turquoise Leaf pieces.

3. Sew a piece made in step #1 to either side of the piece made in step #2. Refer to the diagram for the correct orientation. Press. Repeat to yield two strips. These strips are the top and bottom rows of the placemat.

4. Sew a 2” Snail Fabric Square to the end of a 2” x 5” White Fabric rectangle. Press. Repeat to create four Snail/White pieces.

5. Sew one 2” x 4” Turquoise Fabric rectangle to either side of a 2” White Fabric square. Press. Repeat to create two Turquoise/White pieces.

6. Sew a piece made in step #4 to either side of a piece made in step #5. Refer to the diagram for the correct orientation. Press. Repeat to create two strips. These strips are rows #2 and #4 of the placemat.

7. Sew a 2” x 3 1/2” Turquoise rectangle to a 3 ½” x 5” Snails Fabric rectangle. Press. Repeat to make two Turquoise/Snail fabric pieces.

8. Sew one 3 ½” x 4” White Fabric rectangle to either side of a 2” x 3 ½” Green Leaf Fabric rectangle. Press.

9. Sew a piece made in step #7 to either side of the piece made in step #8. Refer to the diagram for the correct orientation. Press. This is the middle row of the placemat.

Placemat Construction:
1. Sew the rows together in consecutive order. Refer to the diagram for the correct orientation of the rows. Press.

2. Place the placemat backing face down on a flat surface.
3. Place a piece of very thin quilt batting on top of the backing.
4. Place the placemat top, face up, on top of the backing and batting. Either pin or baste the placemat sandwich together. (Note: I don’t do either. Instead, I use Sulky KK2000 Temporary Spray Adhesive. Follow the directions on the can)
5. Sew the placemat layers together using decorative stitches. (Note: I use Sulky 30wt. variegated thread: the subtle color changes give a depth to the stitches that plain thread can’t).
6. Bind the raw edges with a 2” strip of Green Leaf Fabric.

Napkins:
1. Stack two fabrics from the placemats together. Cut a 17” square.
2. Place the two fabrics, face together, and sew a ¼” seam on 3 sides. Turn right side out, and press.
3. Tuck a ¼” in at the unsewn edge of the napkin. Press carefully
4. Sew around the edge of the napkin using a decorative stitch. Be sure that the open edge is sewn completely together.
