Annie Moody wanted to create a summer set for her family picnic table. She thought it would be fun to incorporate elements from nature and then use a classic red and white check fabric.
The set includes: embroidered placemats, napkins, napkin rings, platter cover, and fly swatter.

Fabric and Notions Required:
Note: Yardage measurements for four placemats.
- 1 1/2 yds red and white check fabric
- 1/4 yd gold wheat fabric
- 1/4 yd blue cloud fabric
- 1/4 yd green grass fabric
- 1/4 yd stone fabric
- Fabric scraps of various colors for appliquès
- 1 yd pre-washed muslin
- 1 yd batting
- All-purpose thread
- Heat n Bond Lite Æ
- SulkyÆ 30 wt. 100% cotton thread (Black #733-1055, Green #733-1174)
- SulkyÆ Blendables 100% cotton 30 wt. thread ( Orange #733-4006, Green #733-4019, Brown #733-4011)
- Safety pins
Fabric Preparation:
- Cut four 12" x 7" pieces from the red and white check fabric.
- Cut 2" bias strips a total of 200" in length for binding from remaining red and white check fabric.
- Cut four 4 1/2" x 13" strips from the gold wheat fabric.
- Cut four 3 1/2" x 15" strips from the blue cloud fabric.
- Cut four 3 1/2" x 10" strips from the green grass fabric.
- Cut four 3 1/2" x 12" strips from the stone fabric.
- Cut four 14" x 20" pieces from the pre-washed muslin for backing.
- Cut four 14" x 20" pieces from the batting.
Assembly:
Note: Refer to placemat diagram below.
- Set up the machine for Ordinary sewing.
- Sew each 3 1/2" x 12" stone strip to the bottom of each 12" x 7" red and white check piece. Press seams towards stone fabric.
- Sew each 3 1/2" x 10" green grass strip to right side. Press seams toward green grass fabric.
- Sew each 3 1/2" x 15" blue cloud strip to top. Press seams toward blue cloud fab
- Sew each 4 1/2" x 13" gold wheat strip to left side. Press seams toward gold wheat fabric.

Appliquè:
- Download appliquè patterns above.
- Place Heat n Bond LiteÆ, smooth side up over appliquè patterns.
- Trace appliquè patterns.
- Cut out traced patterns just outside the line.
- Draw a 1/4" x 10" strip for flower stem on Heat n Bond LiteÆ. Iron onto green fabric.
- Draw a 1/4" x 5" for birdhouse post strip on Heat n Bond LiteÆ. Iron onto brown fabric.
- Iron on Heat n Bond LiteÆ according to package directions on appliquè fabrics.
- Cut out fabric on drawn line. Allow to cool.
- Peel backing off appliquè pieces.
- Starting with Section A place appliquè pieces on placemat according similar to sample.
- Using iron, press appliquè pieces in place.
- Repeat step 10 & 11 for Sections B, C and D.
Section A
- Set machine up for Ordinary sewing.
- Thread the needle with black cotton thread and the bobbin with a Janome Pre-wound black bobbin.
- Attach the Custom Crafted Foot.
- Place Janome Tearaway Stabilizer under placemat.
- Select a Parisian stitch.
- Sew around the center of the daisy.
Hint: The outside of the stitch should land in the yellow section of the flower and the bite should land on the daisy center.
- Thread the needle with SulkyÆ Blendables orange thread and the needle with a Janome Pre-wound white bobbin.
- Select a Zigzag stitch. Adjust the width to 3.5 and length to 0.35.
- Sew around the outside of the daisy petals.
- Thread the needle with SulkyÆ Blendables green thread.
- Attach the Satin Stitch foot F.
- Select an Overcast stitch. Adjust the width to 4.5 and length to 1.5.
- Sew around flower stem. Use red arrow on foot to guide you down edge of stem. Be sure to place stitch on stem so pointed side of stitch is on outside of stem to mimic a thorny stem.
- Select a Blanket stitch.
- Sew around leaves.
Section B
- Thread the needle with black cotton thread and the bobbin with a Janome Pre-wound black bobbin.
- Attach the Custom Crafted Zig-zag foot.
- Select a Blanket stitch.
- Sew the sun center.
- Select a Triple Stretch stitch.
- Sew a gentle curve from the kite base to approximately 1/2" to 1" from sun to form kite string.
- Thread the needle with SulkyÆ Blendables orange thread and the bobbin with a Janome Pre-wound white bobbin.
- Select a Zigzag stitch. Adjust the width to 2.2 and length to 0.35.
- Sew around edge of sun.
- Select a Patchwork stitch.
- Sew inside cross sections of kite.
- Select a Blanket stitch.
- Sew the outside of kite.
- Select a Decorative stitch.
- Press Memory and combine stitch, ending with a Locking stitch.
Hint: This will allow the sewing machine to stitch only one sequence of the decorative stitch.
- Starting at the kite string begin stitching the decorative stitch. Pivot placemat to stitch other side of kite tail beginning at kite string. Stitch three sets of kite tails evenly spaced.
Section C
- Thread the needle with black cotton thread and the bobbin with a Janome Pre-wound black bobbin.
- Select a Blanket stitch.
- Sew right side of birdhouse.
- Press the TOM or Horizontal Flip key to mirror image the stitch.
- Sew left side of birdhouse.
- Sew birdhouse hole and roof.
- Thread the needle with SulkyÆ Blendables brown thread.
- Select a Zigzag stitch. Adjust the width to 3.0 and length to 0.65.
- Sew around birdhouse platform and post.
Section D
- Thread the needle with black cotton thread and the bobbin with a Janome Pre-wound black bobbin.
- Select a Blanket stitch.
- Sew around apple, red part of watermelon and around strawberries.
- Thread the needle with SulkyÆ Blendables green thread.
- Select a Zigzag stitch. Adjust the width to 2.5 and length to 0.35.
- Sew around apple leaf and strawberry tops.
- Adjust the width to 3.0.
- Sew around watermelon rind.
Quilting
- Layer placemat backing, batting and top.
- Pin baste through all layers.
- Attach the Even Feed foot.
- Thread the needle with all-purpose thread and the bobbin with a Janome Pre-wound white bobbin.
- Select Straight stitch #1.
- Stitch in the ditch on seam lines.
- Sew bias strips together to form approximately 200" of bias binding.
- Press seams to one side.
- Press in half lengthwise, wrong sides together.
- Stitch bias binding to front of placemat mitering at corners and overlapping beginning and end.
- Press binding away from placemat front.
- Hand stitch binding to back of placemat, mitering at the corners.
Picnic Napkins and Napkin Rings
Fabric and Notions Required
- 1 yd red and white check fabric
- Screening (available at hardware stores)
- 1/2" adhesive VelcroÆ
- Assortment of Robison-AntonÆ polyester embroidery thread
- Robison-AntonÆ 50 wt. 100% Cotton thread (Foxy Red #22263)
- All-purpose thread
- 3/4" pin findings
- Aleene'sÆ Original Tacky glue
Fabric Preparation
- Cut four 14" squares from red and white fabric for napkins.
- Cut four 5" x 1 1/2" strips from screening.
- Cut one 10" x 12" piece from screening.
- Cut four 1/2" squares from VelcroÆ.
Napkins

- Open Customizer 10000 Plus EasyEdit.
- Insert the Stitchitize 4000 Design Collection CD ROM into your computer.
- Click Import. Open Design # KI163.
- Click File. Print a template for perfect placement.
- Transfer the design to the machine via USB, RS232C or ATA PC Card.
- Set up the Memory Craft for Professional-Style Embroidery.
- Mark the crosshair for the design in one corner of the 14" square, placing the top of bee's head approximately 2" from corner.
- Place Janome Wet 'n Set stabilizer in the Standard Hoop A.
- Position the fabric in the hoop using the Clothsetter 10000 for perfect placement.
- Stitch design.
- Repeat for remaining 14" squares.
- Set up the Memory Craft for Ordinary sewing.
- Thread the needle and bobbin with cotton thread.
- Attach the Rolled Hem foot D.
- Select a Zigzag stitch. Adjust the width to 3.0 and length to 2.5.
- With right side of fabric down, begin to insert edge of fabric into Rolled Hem foot D, bringing the fabric slightly to the left allowing the foot to roll the fabric.
- Stitch hem.
- Press.
- Repeat for remaining 14" squares.
Napkin Rings

- Set up the Memory Craft for Ordinary sewing.
- Thread the needle and bobbin with cotton thread.
- Attach Custom Crafted Foot.
- Select a Decorative stitch.
- Place Janome RinsAway Stabilizer under 5" x 1 1/2" piece of screen.
- Sew down each 5" side of screen. Align the inside right toe of foot along edge of screen.
- Stitch each 1 1/2" end of screen.
- Repeat with all four pieces of screen.
- Immerse screen in bowl of water. Allow stabilizer to dissolve.
- Place pieces of screen between layers of towel and pat dry.
- When screen is dry, stick Velcro squares to screen at each end.
Inside Information:
To lock the stitches at the end of a decorative stitch, press the locking stitch button to complete the stitch sequence. To lock the stitches at any point in the decorative stitch, press the reverse button and machine will immediately lock in your stitches. Your Janome machine will automatically lock the beginning of all decorative stitches. No need to press the locking stitch button. |
Butterfly Decoration
- Open Customizer 10000 Plus EasyEdit.
- Insert the Stitchitize 4000 Design Collection CD ROM into your computer.
- Click Import. Open Designs # DA050, #DA055, #DA036, and #DA038.
- Combine designs in the Large Hoop B.
- Transfer designs to the machine via USB, RS232C or ATA PC Card.
- Set up the Memory Craft for Professional-Style Embroidery.
- Place Janome RinsAway stabilizer and 10" x 12" piece of screen in the Large Hoop B.
- Stitch designs.
- After embroidery is complete remove screen from hoop.
- Trim away excess stabilizer and screen by trimming as close to stitching as possible without cutting any stitches.
- Place butterfly embroideries in water to dissolve remaining stabilizer.
- Pat dry with towel.
- While butterflies are still damp, shape wings to look realistic.
- Allow to completely air dry.
- Glue pin findings to the back body portion of the butterfly embroidery using Aleene'sÆ Original Tacky glue.
- Allow to set for a few hours.
- Pin one butterfly to each napkin ring hiding any VelcroÆ that may show through.
Bug Free Food Protector
Fabric and Notions Required:

Fabric Preparation
- Cut a 28" circle from screening.
- Cut a 9" x 9" square from screening.
- Fold circle in quarters.
- Mark center of circle with a hand stitch.
- Mark a 22" diameter circle by measuring out 11" from center with chalk marking pen.
- Mark six equal pie shaped wedges.
- Hand sew a large basting stitch on the 22" mark.
- Hand sew on the chalk line to mark the six wedges.

First Section - Girl in Flower Garden
- Set up the Memory Craft for Professional-Style Embroidery.

- Click Copy. Click Paste. Click Paste again. You now have three of the same design on the screen.
- Position designs in a triangular shape with two floral designs on the bottom and one on the top.
- Click on bottom left design.
- Click Edit. Click Rotate/Flip. Click Free Rotate. Rotate design 130∞ counterclockwise.
- Position design so center stem of flower is in the center.
- Click on bottom right design.
- Click Edit. Click Rotate/Flip. Click Free Rotate. Rotate design 130∞ clockwise.
- Position design so center stem of flower in also in the center of design.
- Position the three designs around so the stems are blended well.
- Click Import. Open Designs # MW044, KI177, and MW016.
- Position bee designs on the flowers as desired similar to sample.
- Click Combine to combine designs into one hooping.

Inside Information:
When using the Combine feature in Customizer 10000 Plus EasyEdit, if you are unable to get all your designs to become grayed out, your design layout has exceeded the size of hoop area. In order to combine these designs, click on the individual designs and reposition to fit in the hoop. Be aware that the design you click on and move last will be the design that stitches out on top of the others. In our sample here, you may need to move the strawberry basket or the vegetables in closer to the pickle jar. Be sure to click on the watermelon last, even if you don't move it or the watermelon will not be in the forefront of your buffet. |
Fifth Section - Picnic Ant
- Set up the Memory Craft for Professional-Style Embroidery.
- Insert the Stitchitize 4000 Design Collection CD ROM into your computer.
- Open Digitizer 10000 EasyDesign.
- Click Setup. Click Work Environment. Select Hoop B.
- Click Embroidery. Click Insert Design. Open Design #FL111.
- Click Resequence. Click View Color.
- Click on every color showing except green while holding down the Control key. Click Delete. Click OK. Only the grass should remain.
- Click Select. The grass should be highlighted
- Click Rotate 45∞ CW/CCW twice.
- Position grass to bottom right hand corner approximately 1/2" from corner.
- Click Copy. Click Paste five times.
- Position grass side by side.
- Click Edit. Click Select All.
- Click and drag the grass to stretch it out and make it approximately 2 1/2" tall.
- Click Embroidery. Click Insert Design. Open Design #KI057.
- Click Rotate 45∞ CW/CCW twice.
- Position ant so his feet are in the grass.
- Click File. Print a template
- Transfer design to the machine via USB, RS232C or ATA PC Card.

Sixth Section - Kite and Flowers

- Click Copy. Click Paste.Position second flower to the right.
- Click Flip H. Position flower to the center of the lower right hand quarter of the screen.
- Click on first flower. Increase size to 120%.
- Position flower to rest on the same horizontal grid line as the other flower but leave flower on the center vertical line.
- Click Import. Open Design #FL111.
- Rotate design 90∞. Position to the middle of two flowers with base of flower resting on the same horizontal gridline.
- Reposition the flower on the right to be closer.
- Click Import. Open Design #SD012. Position to the left most side of the flowers with the base resting on the same horizontal gridline.
- Click Import. Open Design #SD017,
- Increase size to 120%.
- Position to the left of the flowers with the base of the dandelion resting on the same horizontal gridline.
Note: Be sure all the flowers are close together so they can all be stitched in one hooping.
- Click Import. Open Design #BF036.
- Decrease size to 80%.
- Click Flip H. Position over flowers.
- Click Import. Open Design #KI083. Position kite above the flowers to the right.
- Click Import. Open Design #KI038. Position sun above kite to the left.
- Click Combine to combine designs into one hooping.
- Click File. Save design as an *.caf.
- Click File. Print a template.
- Transfer design to the machine via USB, RS232C or ATA PC Card.

3-D Butterfly
- Set up the Memory Craft for Professional-Style Embroidery.
- Insert the Stitchitize 4000 Design Collection CD ROM into your computer.
- Open Customizer 10000 Plus EasyEdit.
- Click Import. Open Design #DA033.
- Click Edit Hoop Size. Click Standard Hoop A.
- Transfer design to the machine via USB, RS232C or ATA PC Card.
- Mark the crosshair on the screen circle.
- Place Janome RinsAway stabilizer and screen square in the Standard Hoop A, using the Clothsetter 10000 for perfect placement.
- Stitch designs.
- Remove screen from hoop.
- Cut around butterfly as close to stitching as possible. Be careful not to cut any stitches.
- Place embroidery in water to dissolve stabilizer.
- Allow to dry, shaping wings of butterfly while it is still slightly damp.
- When completely dry glue pin finding to the back of the butterfly's body using Aleene'sÆ Original Tacky Glue.
- Allow to dry.
Assembly:
- Carefully tear away stabilizer off back of screen.
- Place 28" screen circle in water to allow stabilizer to dissolve.
- Remove from water and allow to dry completely.
- Cut screen to 22" in diameter along the sewn line.
- Cut between sections on the sewn line.
- Remove hand sewn thread line.
- Place a chalk mark between each section 5" from outside of circle.
- Place chalk marks on outside edge of circle 1" from either side of cut wedge to the 5" mark.
- Cut along these marks.

- Set up the machine for Ordinary sewing.
- Thread the needle and bobbin with cotton thread.
- Select a Zig-zag stitch. Adjust the width 4.0 and length .30.
- Starting at center embroidery stitch between cut sections butting up each section as you sew. Stop sewing 5" away from edge.
- Repeat until all six sections are sewn together.
- Now stitch the 5" sections together in the same manner, butting sections together as you sew.
- Place a Zig-zag stitch on the outside edge of the screen.
- Place the 3-D Butterfly pin on the edge of the Spider web.
Whimsical Flyswatter:
Fabric and Notions Required:
- 10" x 12" nylon screen
- 1/2" square piece of VelcroÆ

Professional-Style Embroidery
- Set up the Memory Craft for Professional-Style Embroidery.
- Insert the Stitchitize 4000 Design Collection CD ROM into your computer.
- Open Digitizer 10000 EasyDesign.
- Click Embroidery. Click Insert Design. Open Design #BO033.
- Click Object Details. Click the Dimension tab. Change the width and height to 135%. Change the X, Y position to 0.00.
- Click Embroidery. Click Insert Design. Open Design #KI101.
- Position the bug design to the lower half of the oval.
- Click Monogram. Select Adept Font. Font size 15. Select upper circle orientation. Type "SPLAT". Click OK.
- Click on the screen where you want the word to appear and drag downward. Release the mouse button. Press Enter on the keyboard.
- Reposition the word within the top half of the oval.
- Click File. Save as an *.JAN and *.JEF.
- Click File. Print a template.
- Transfer design to the machine via USB, RS232C or ATA PC Card.
- Place Janome RinsAway stabilizer and screen in the Large Hoop B, using the Clothsetter 10000 for perfect placement.
- Stitch designs. Follow thread color instructions on sewing machine on threads 1 through 5. On thread change #6 use Cerulean #5801. On thread change #7 use Foxy Red #5563 with Goldenrod #5542.
- Remove screen from hoop.
- Tear away excess stabilizer and place screen in water to dissolve.
- Remove from water and allow to dry completely.
Assembly:
- Set up the Memory Craft for Ordinary sewing.
- Thread the needle and bobbin with SulkyÆ 12 wt. 100% cotton.
- Attach the Overcasting Foot M.
- Select an Overlock stitch.
- Trim away screen around outside of flyswatter as close to stitching as possible without cutting the stitches.
- Slowly stitch using the wire on the left of the foot as your guide.
Note: You will mostly be stitching on air and occasionally needle will swing to the left to catch the screen. The result will be a lacy picot edge.
- Paint the paint stir stick with yellow paint.
- Allow to dry and embellish with leaf or bug rubber stamps (if desired).
- Attach one side of VelcroÆ to end of paint stick and the other half of Velcro on the backside of the screen on the bug's body.
