Sashiko is a beautiful quilting technique from Japan. Small hand stitches create repeating patterns or motifs to cover the entire surface, as featured in this simple purse. What better technique to showcase the new hand-look quilt stitches on the Memory Craft 11000 Special Edition?

Create the Sashiko Quilting

1. Cut two rectangles from the decorator fabric, 14” x 11”. Cut matching rectangles of batting to match.
2. Print the Sashiko pattern for each rectangle. Place the pattern centered on each rectangle of fabric.
3. Set up the Memory Craft 11000 Special Edition for ordinary sewing, with monofilament thread on top of the machine, and Janome Acrylic Embroidery Thread in the bobbin. Attach the F foot.
4. Select Hand-look quilt stitch #63.
5. Follow the lines of the Sashiko pattern, extending the lines of stitching 1” beyond the pattern, and sewing through the paper pattern. Repeat for both rectangles of fabric.
6. When the stitching is complete, tear away the excess paper.

Cutting Instructions
Print the purse pattern. Join Purse to Purse 2 to make a complete pattern for the purse. Trim the pattern pieces along the cutting line. Cut the following pieces:
Purse: Cut 2 from quilted fabric
Cut 2 from fat quarter 1 for lining
Flap: Cut 1 from decorator fabric
Cut 1 from fat quarter 2 for lining
Cut 1 from batting
Pocket: Cut a 10” x 14” rectangle from fat quarter 3
Loops: Cut a 2” x 10” rectangle from decorator fabric

Sewing Instructions
1. Set up the Memory Craft 11000 Special Edition for ordinary sewing. Change to the A foot, with all purpose thread on top of the machine and in the bobbin.
2. Baste the Flap lining to the matching batting. Using the patterns, transfer the marks for the magnetic snap.
3. Follow the instructions included with the magnetic snap, and install the female side of the snap on the Flap. Install the remaining side of the magnetic closure as indicated on the purse.
4. Place the two quilted purse sections right sides together. Using a 1/4” seam allowance, sew the sides and the bottom of the purse.
5. For each corner of the purse, fold the fabric so that the seams match. Sew across the corner with a 1/4” seam.
6. Place the Flap and Flap lining right sides together. Sew together using a 1/4” seam, leaving the top open. Trim the corners and turn the Flap right sides out. Top stitch around the flap.

7. Center the flap between the seams on one side of the purse, with right sides together. Baste in place.
8. Fold the 2” x 10” rectangle in half lengthwise and press. Fold the long edges to meet the center fold, and press. Fold so that the raw edges are enclosed, and topstitch both edges. Cut into 2 1/2” sections. These are the loops that will hold the purse handles in place.
9. Fold each loop in half with raw edges matching, and baste in place on the upper edge of the purse, adjusting the spacing to match the purse handles.
10. To create the zippered pocket for the lining, place the 10” x 14” rectangle wrong side up. Mark a 1/2” x 9” box 1” from a 10” edge. See below.

11. Place the marked rectangle over one of the purse lining pieces with right sides together, aligning the top edges. Stitch around the marked box, using a short stitch length. Cut down the center of the box through both layers, and into each corner, taking care to not clip the stitches.
12. Turn the opening right sides out and press. Place the completed box over the 9” zipper. Edge stitch around the box, securing the zipper.
13. Fold the 10” x 14” rectangle in half with right sides together. Stitch the sides of the pocket. Baste across the top edge of both rectangles to complete the zippered pocket.
14. Place the purse lining right sides together. Stitch the sides using a 1/4” seam. Stitch the bottom using a 1/4” seam, leaving a 4” opening in the middle of the seam. Fold each corner so the seams match and stitch across the corner with a 1/4” seam.
15. Place the purse unit inside the lining unit, with the top edges matching. Stitch, using a 1/4” seam. Turn the purse right sides out, and smooth the lining into the purse. Topstitch the upper edge. Hand stitch the opening in the lining.
16. To attach the handles, locate the small screws in each of the metal ends. Remove the screws, and slip the metal end of the handle through a fabric loop of the purse. Replace the screw. Repeat for each metal end, with one handle on each side of the purse. This completes the purse.
