This is a must have for anyone who has a serger! The accessory pockets keep those things handy that are necessary for successful serging. The large pocket catches all those fabric scraps that can easily be discarded later. When attending serger classes you don't have to worry about where to put your "extras".

Janome Supplies Required:

  • Any Janome Serger
  • Janome Serger Thread
  • Serger Needle Size 14

  • 1/4" wide ribbon
  • Decorative serger thread
  • Double eye needle
  • Fabric marking pen
  • Seam sealant
  • Washable glue stick

Fabric Preparation:

  1. Cut one 11 1/2" x 17 1/2" piece for the pocket base.
  2. Cut one 11 1/2" x 15 1/2" piece for the pocket.
  3. Cut one 5 1/4" x 7" piece for the scissor pocket base. Cut into a pie shape.

  10. Cut one 4" x 4" piece for seam sealant pocket.

Instructions:

  1. Set up your serger for a 3-thread wide Overedge stitch.
  2. Thread the needle with Janome Overlock thread and the loopers with decorative serger thread.
  3. Set the needle tension to 4.
  4. Set the upper looper tension to 2 1/2 and lower looper tension to 4 1/2.
  5. Set stitch length at 3.0 and differential feed at 1.0.
Note: If needed, refer to Instruction Manual for suggested settings.
  6. Test stitch on scrap fabric.
  7. Match accessory base pieces with pocket pieces, wrong side of pocket to right side of base.
  8. Serge across the tops of the pocket pieces only. Do not serge the sides or bottoms.
Note: Use 5/8" seam allowance for entire project.
  9. Thread double eye needle with 1/4" ribbon.
  10. Weave ribbon through stitches.
  11. Place the accessory pocket pieces on top of their matching base pieces.
  12. Serge across the bottoms of matched accessory pockets and bases. Do not serge scissor pocket.
  13. Starting at the bottom and advancing to the top, serge the sides of the scissor pocket and base.
Hint: You will have to serge on the right side and then on the wrong side to advance from bottom to top. This prevents the pocket pieces from shifting.
  14. Dab thread tails with seam sealant and hide thread tails.
  15. Arrange completed accessory pockets on the long side of the 11 1/2" x 15 1/2" pocket piece. Start at least 1" in from the short sides.
Note: Use the glue stick to secure the accessory pockets to the large pocket piece.
  16. Serge across the long side catching the tops of the accessory pocket base pieces.
  17. Dab seam sealant where seams intersect.
  18. Quarter mark one of the short sides of the 11 1/2" x 17 1/2" large pocket base piece with pins.
  19. Mark the center bottom of the pocket piece (with accessory pockets) with a pin.
  20. Secure the pocket piece to the base by matching up the center pins.
  21. Secure to the next pin and stop.
  22. Starting at the long sides secure to the first pin.
  23. Fold excess to form a box pleat. Secure with pins.
  24. Press the two box pleats as flat as possible.
  25. Serge across the bottom. Be sure to remove pins as you approach the upper knife.
Hint: Slow down when you approach the pleats but do not stop.
  26. Starting at the bottom serge both long sides.
  27. Serge across the short side at the top.
  28. If desired, serge across the bottom corners for a more decorative custom look.
  29. Dab seam sealant where seams intersect and hide thread tails.
