This dual function shawl is just perfect for those cool spring nights! You can keep the shawl folded up as a pillow in the back seat of your car for whenever you may need it. Combining the embroidery from your Memory Craft 10000 and the Flatlock stitch on your serger makes this a delightful and useful project.

Janome Supplies Required:

  • Memory Craft 11,000, 10000, 10001, 9500, 300E 350E (Embroidery only)
  • Any Janome Serger
  • Card Reader 10000
  • Memory Card #140 (Butterfly Designs) or design of choice.
  • Clothsetter 10000 or clothsetter table
  • Large Hoop "B"
  • Embroidery Foot P
  • Janome Embroidery thread
  • Janome Bobbin thread

  • Blue Tip needle 75/11
  • Serger Needle Size 11

Fabric and Notions Required:

  • 1 yd. fleece
  • 1/4 yd. turquoise cotton fabric
  • 1/4 yd. print cotton fabric
  • 1/3 yd. lavender cotton fabric
  • Decorative serger thread
  • Plastic quilting ruler
  • Rotary Cutter
  • Cutting mat
  • Seam Sealant

Fabric Preparation:

  1. Cut two 15" x 36" strips from fleece.
  2. Cut four 1 3/4" x 45" strips from the turquoise fabric.
  3. Cut two 1 3/4" x 45" strips from the print fabric.
  4. Cut two 12" squares from the lavender fabric.


Professional-Style Embroidery:

  1. Set up the Memory Craft 10000 for Professional-Style Embroidery.
  2. Connect the Card Reader 10000 to the MC10000.
  3. Insert Memory Card #140 (Butterfly Designs) into the Card Reader 10000 or use design of choice..
  4. Press the Embroidery Mode key.
  5. Press the Edit tab.
  6. Press the Card Reader tab. Select Design #8.
  7. Import Design #8 two more times. Arrange designs according to sample.
  8. Press the Built-in tab. Select Design #7. Arrange according to sample.
  9. Save layout to the Built-in memory or an ATA PC Card.
  10. Properly stabilize one 12" lavender square.
  11. Place in the Large Hoop "B" using the Clothsetter 10000 for perfect placement.
  12. Stitch design.


Construction:

  1. Set up the serger for a 3/4 thread (standard) Overlock stitch. Use 1/4" seam allowance for all seams.
  2. Serge one strip of turquoise to one strip of print, wrong sides together.
  3. Press to set seam and then press seam to one side.
  4. Serge one strip of turquoise to the print fabric, wrong sides together. It should then be solid, print solid. Set aside.
  5. Repeat for remaining three strips.
  6. You should have two sections that have three strips each.
  7. Measure the width of the three pieces sewn together.
  8. Cut strip into squares with all sides equal. (They should be approximately 4 1/4" squares)
  9. Arrange squares to form three rail fence patterns. Three across and three down.
  10. Serge strip squares to form a larger square, with wrong sides together. It should end up approximately 12 3/4". Press all seams. Set squares aside.
  11. Serge across the top only of the embroidered square and one rail fence square, wrong sides together.
  12. Serge across the top only of the remaining lavender square and the remaining three rail fence square, with wrong sides together.
  13. Turn both sections right side out and press.
  14. Set up serger for 2/3 thread Flatlock. Thread the upper looper with decorative thread.
  15. Flatlock the two pieces of fleece together at the short ends to form one long section. It is now 15" x 71 1/2". Pull flat.
    Hint: If desired use a pressing cloth and press the seam flat to keep fleece from melting.
  16. Lay the two pockets on the raw edges of the ends of the section. The pocket will be smaller than the width of the fleece.
  17. On the outer sides, cut fleece to angle into and align with pocket.
  18. Pin pockets to fleece with the embroidered section down and three rail fence sections up. Keep pins away from the raw edge.
  19. Set up serger for a 3 thread Overlock. Thread the upper and lower loopers with decorative thread.
  20. Serge around all edges. Be sure to catch the pocket sections.
  21. Hide thread tails and apply seam sealant to corners.
  22. When not in use, turn pocket right side out so that embroidered square is exposed and fold into pocket to form pillow.
