During the months of July and August, designers had the opportunity to participate in Michael Miller Fabrics’ The Great Pattern Hack Challenge where they were able to take any pattern and alter it using their skills and creativity. The grand prize winner of 10 sewing patterns, 15 yards of Michael Miller Fabrics, a feature on Making it Fun and a Janome DC2015 sewing machine was Jessica B. from Illinois.
Jessica is a designer for Lil Luxe Collection in Chicago. When she is not running around after her daughters; chauffeuring them around or doing her normal day-to-day housework, she is sewing.
Jessica has been sewing since she was 9 years old when her mother taught her how to thread her machine. That summer, Jessica and her siblings organized their own kid version of a neighborhood “carnival” with all of the kids on their cul-de-sac. They had everyone bring their pets and created their own version of a “petting zoo”. They created wagon rides and came up with their own games for which Jessica sewed all of the prizes. She made Scrunchies, hacky sacks, bean bags, small stuffed animals and coin purses. All of the parents were impressed and everyone had a great time. Jessica learned new skills and has been sewing ever since.
Jessica has been sewing for over 20 years. Everything she knows about sewing has been self taught, read or seen on the Internet or passed down from relatives. She has a Bachelor’s degree in interior architecture and design and had a year in a half left in her Master’s program when Jessica and her husband decided it was best for her to stay at home with their first daughter. Jessica started sewing for her as a creative outlet and had such a good response to her designs from her family and friends. Then when they had their second daughter, her mission was clear. Lil Luxe Collection was born after her third child was born and it quickly became so much more than Jessica had first imagined. Now on her second year, Jessica is proud to say that she has been blessed with a beautiful family and a quickly growing business that she has set up to fulfill her dreams while being able to raise her daughters.
