Lesson 1 - Embroidery On Woven Fabric

You’ll learn basic guidelines for embroidering on most woven fabrics. Some of the guidelines may change depending upon the thread type, stabilizer, design size/density and size of the finished project.
What you’ll learn
The following lesson is designed as a guideline for future reference when embroidering on most woven fabrics. Some of the guidelines may change depending upon the thread type, stabilizer, design size/density and size of the finished project.

Materials Needed

  • 8” x 8” square of woven fabric
  • 8” x 8” square of medium weight tear-away stabilizer
  • Assorted thread
  • Memory Card of choice
  • Blue Tip Needle

To prepare your Janome Harmony 8100 for this embroidery exercise:

  1. Attach the “P” foot.
  2. Fill a bobbin with Janome embroidery thread and place it in the bobbin holder.
  3. Insert a Blue tip needle.
  4. Set the pressure Dial at “2”
  5. Make sure the feed dogs are in the lowered position.

Instructions

  1. With your machine power turned “off”, insert a Memory Card of your choice into the card slot on the right side of your machine.
  2. Turn the machine “on”.
  3. From the Menu, select the Memory Card key.
  4. Select design of your choice.
  5. If available, locate the matching design template. On a piece of woven fabric, mark the crosshair marking. Layer the fabric, stabilizer and place in embroidery hoop. (Refer to the instruction manual for proper hooping.)
  6. Attach the embroidery hoop to the machine by turning the knob so it is parallel with the hoop. Insert the key into the carriage and turn the knob clockwise.
  7. Using the screen as your guideline, select the first thread color in the sequence.
  8. Thread your Harmony 8100.
  9. Lower the presser foot. Press the Start/stop button. Sew 5 or 6 stitches and stop the machine by pressing the Start/Stop button again. Raise the presser foot and cut off the extra thread close to the starting point. Resume embroidery by pressing the Start/Stop button once again.
  10. The machine will stop automatically after each color segment is sewn. Clip the upper thread and rethread the machine with the next color in the sequence.
  11. After design is completed, un-hoop the fabric and clip away excess thread tails on top and underneath.
