“If you are a little afraid of your serger, this project is for you. I will admit that I was afraid and didn’t want to take it out of the box for fear that I wouldn’t know what to do with all of those threads.
This step-by-step guide for beginners provides advice on choosing the proper settings, the perfect fabric and easy-to-follow directions for serging this classy glasses case.” – Janome Maker Milinda Stephenson
Instructions
Step 1: Cut out Fabric:
- Cut one 8 1/2″ x 8″ lining fabric
- Cut one 8 1/2″ x 8″ outer fabric
- If you would like your glass case to be more sturdy, cut one 8 1/2″ x 8″ piece of interfacing and iron to the back of either the lining or outer fabric piece.
Step 2: Prepare to Serge by Aligning the Fabric:
- With the right sides together, align the fabric pieces along the 8 1/2″ edge.
- If you wish, pin the fabric in the center (well away from the seam, you don’t want to ever serge over pins!).
Step 3: Serge One 8 1/2″ Edge:
- Serge the edge by lifting the foot slightly and sliding it under the front edge of the foot.
- Be certain that the presser foot is in the down position and serge.
- You may use the guidelines on your serger to keep your stitching straight.
Step 4: Serge Off, Leaving a 3″ Thread Tail:
- Allow the fabric to move beyond the presser foot and continue serging until you’ve created a 3″ tail.
- Clip the thread tail at the fabric edge.
Secure the Stitches:
- The easiest way to be certain your stitches don’t come undone is to dab a dot of Fray-Check where you clipped your stitches.
- Allow the Fray-Check to dry before continuing your project.
Iron:
- Iron open the seam.
Step 5: Fold Fabric in Half (Hot Dog Style)
Step 6: Serge
- Begin by serging the outer fabric end. Serge to the end.
- Serge off a 3″ tail and clip.
Secure Along the Long Edge:
- Next, serge the long side.
- Leave the lining fabric end open for turning.
Remember to Serge Off:
- Be certain to serge off, but this time, serge a 6″ thread tail.
- Clip the thread tail in the center, leaving 3″ at your serger, and 3″ beyond the fabric edge.
- Turn right side out.
Serge the Lining Closed:
- Serge closed the opening you used to turn the fabric.
- Press your fabric.
- Turn it right side out.
