DIY Duster Coat Using a T-Shirt Pattern

Created by: Maker, Porfiria Gomez

I recently found a beautiful carpet fabric while exploring the NUC fashion
district, and I knew it would make a stunning, unique duster coat. With a little
creativity and my trusty Janome sewing machine, I turned this textured fabric
into a wearable piece that adds warmth and style to any outfit.

Materials Needed:

An oversized XXL T-shirt (used as a pattern template)
Scissors
Pins
Janome sewing machine
Thread to match your fabric
Iron and ironing board

FirstStep-by-Step Process:

  1. Creating the Pattern:
I started by laying the fabric out flat, then placed an XXL T-shirt over it. This
T-shirt became my template for the duster’s shape. Using a fabric marker, I
traced around the T-shirt, allowing for extra width and length to give it that
    cozy, oversized feel.
  1. Cutting the Fabric:
After tracing, I cut out the front and back pieces of the duster. For the front, I
cut a vertical slit down the center of the front piece to create the open duster
    look.
  2. Sewing the Seams:
Once the pieces were cut, I pinned them together, ensuring the right sides
faced each other. Then, I set my Janome machine to a zigzag stitch, which
worked perfectly for this heavier fabric, providing durability while allowing a
    slight stretch.
  3. Finishing Touches:
I hemmed the edges but I left some open (Personally, I want it to fray to add
more of a design aesthetic that I’ve seen in the past) and added a final stitch
around the sleeves, neckline, and duster opening. I gave the entire piece a
good press with the iron to set the seams and ensure a polished finish.
Why I Love My Janome Machine for This Project
Using my Janome sewing machine made the entire process smooth and
enjoyable. The zigzag stitch is excellent for fabrics like this, and the
machine’s sturdy build handled the thicker carpet material effortlessly. If
you’re looking for a reliable machine that can handle unique fabrics, I highly
    recommend giving Janome a try.
    Final Thoughts
This DIY duster is now one of my go-to pieces, combining comfort and style
with a unique twist. Don’t hesitate to experiment with unconventional
fabrics; you never know what wearable art you’ll create!
    Happy Sewing!!
