Janome Maker: Fran Gulick
Hi there! I’m Fran Gulick of Cotton and Joy, and today I’m here to share a quick and fun summer project – how to sew a sunglasses case!
I have to confess I’m generally pretty rough and careless with my sunglasses. However, since I started having to get prescription sunglasses, I had to start being more careful with them – they’re so expensive to replace!
Thankfully, sewing up a sunglasses case is fast and easy, and you can make them as cute as you’d like!
Materials
- Fabric:
- Outer Fabric: 8″ x 9″
- Lining Fabric: 9″ x 8″
- Foam Stabilizer (such as Soft and Stable) or batting: 8″ x 9″
- Coordinating thread
- Rotary cutter, cutting mat, and ruler
- Fabric marking pen
Fabric used: Between the Pages by Fran Gulick for Riley Blake Designs.

Instructions
Now that you have all of your materials, just follow these quick steps!
1. Quilting
Place the piece of batting or foam stabilizer on your work surface with the 8″ side running vertically.
Next, lay your outer fabric on top of the batting or foam, right side facing up, and baste together. I used basting spray, but you can also pin them together. Then, quilt these two layers together. I opted for a quick diamond motif – I marked two lines with a hera marker, then using my even feed HP foot, quilted them on my Janome M8.

After you’re done quilting, trim the quilted panel to 7″ (h) x 8″ (w).
2. Add Lining
Lay the lining fabric on top of the quilted panel, right sides together. The lining fabric should have a 2″ overhang on the bottom. Mark a horizontal line across the top of the lining fabric 1″ from the top. Sew on the marked line across all layers.

Flip the lining and press the seam with an iron, creating a crisp edge.
3. Fold and Stitch
Keeping the lining flipped up, fold the project in half lengthwise, right sides together–the batting/foam will be exposed. Pin or clip to secure the layers.

Using a ¼” seam allowance, sew around the edges of the quilted panel and lining. Make sure to leave a while on the lining about 3″ wide. Be sure to backstitch to secure the stitches.
4. Turn Right Side Out
After sewing around the edges, turn the case right side out through the 3″ opening in the lining. Gently push out the corners of the batting/foam and lining.
Next, tuck the raw edges of the 3″ opening and press the entire case. Stitch the opening closed either by hand or with a straight stitch close to the edge.

5. Finish Up
Last, but definitely not least, push the lining fabric inside the batting/foam picket and enjoy!
Yes, that’s truly all there is to making a quilted sunglasses case! This is the perfect project for using up scraps, and makes for a fun and quick gift!
