It’s fall– my favorite time of the year! I love to curl up with a hand quilting project or a good book and a cup of tea.
Today, I’ll be showing you how to make some simple, four patch coasters. It’s a great little project for hand quilting or if you are a beginner quilter who wants to practice simple techniques.
I used some prints from the beautiful fabric collection, Tumbleweed, by Sharon Holland for Art Gallery Fabrics. I paired the Burgeon Flora print with the Queen Bee Pure Solid. As of now, they are both available in my online fabric shop.
But feel free to use scraps! This is project is great for any jelly roll strips you want to use up.
Read on for the instructions.
Fabric and Notions Required
Supplies (Makes a set of 2 coasters, measuring 4.5” square)
2 coordinating fabrics for the four patch block
7.5” square of backing
7.5” square of batting
2.25” x 42” strip of binding, cut in half to form (2) 2.25” x 21” strips.
8 wt thread, if you want to hand quilt the coasters
Sewing Machine
50 wt. thread for piecing
Instructions
- Cut (1) 2.5” x 12” strip from each four patch fabric. You will have a total of 2 strips, one in each color.
- Sew the strips together the long way, to form a 4.5” x 12” strip set. Press the seams towards the darker fabric.
- Cut the strip into (4) 2.5” sections, as shown in the photo below.
- Pair two of the sections and alternate the fabrics to form a four patch as shown. The seams should nest. Pin the seams and sew them together to form a square. Press the center seam open for flatness.
- Create a quilt sandwich by putting a 8” square piece of backing, right side down, a 8” square of batting, then your coaster top. Baste as desired.
- Quilt as desired. I chose to hand quilt mine using 8 wt thread from the Evolve Thread Collection by Suzy Quilts.
- Once quilted, add your binding. I used half of the binding strip for each coaster.
These will add some fall flair to your table or would make a sweet gift for teachers or friends.
