Created by: Sam Fung, Janome Educator

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

• 1 ½ Yds fabric
• 1 Yd batting
• 1- Yellow felt square
• 1” Ring
• Thread to match fabric
• Waling foot with open toe (optional)
• Basic sewing supplies
• Pattern Printed at 100%
• Embroidery Machine
• Tear Away Stabilizer
• Paper backed Fusible Web
• Embroidery Thread
• Blind hem foot
• Wide Beading foot
• 6 yds 4mm Strung pearl beads
• 24 buttons for hanging ornaments

PREP:

1. Print patterns @ 100% Do not scale. Cut out.

2. From fabric cut 6 strips of 8” X WOF

3. Fold the 2-selvage edge towards the center of the fabric and place fold line on pattern on fold of fabric. You will be able to get 2 patterns on each strip. Tier 1 and 4 can be on one piece, 2 and 5 on another, and 3 will be on one by itself.

4. Trace pattern onto fabric, then open- up fabric, keeping the fold line of the pattern on the fold line of the fabric, flip pattern and trace the other half to make a whole piece.

5. From batting cut enough 8” wide strips so that you have enough strips for each of the pattern pieces.  Number of strips needed will depend on the width of your batting

6. Take cut batting and place on strip on the table. Place a strip of unmarked fabric with the right side facing you on top of batting, then place the strip with the pattern traced out on top, pin all layers together. Do this for all the tiers.

SEWING DIRECTIONS:

1. Set your machine up by putting on a walking foot with the open toe. Sew on the marked line leaving the top straight top open for turning. For tier # 5 measure down from the top 1 ½” you will be leaving this open for turning. Start and stop on the mark.

2. Trim fabric and batting close to stitching. Clip curves and with sharp scissors clip to the inter point stitching line. Do Not Cut through stitching.

3. Turn all pieces inside out having the batting in the middle, on pieces 1-4 trim batting down ¼” from edge, fold back fabric over batting to cover, and fold front fabric down inside so no raw edge is showing, press

4. For tier # 5 trim batting close to fabric and sew close to the raw edge. The rest of the pieces sew across the top edge to close.

EMBROIDERY DIRECTIONS:

1. Set machine up for embroidery.

2. Hoop fabric and tear away stabilizer.

3. Depend on what size hoop you are using download the file that will fit in your hoop.

4. Embroider numbers, remove from hoop and remove stabilizer.

5. Cut a piece of fusible web big enough to cover all the numbers and fuse to the wrong side.

5. Center each number in the middle of a 1” square and cut out.

6. For tiers 1-4, measure down from the top straight edge 2” and draw a reference line across with a temporary marker/chalk etc.

7. Find the center of each tier and draw a small vertical reference line.

8. Lay each tier out by having # 1 on the bottom, place tier # 2 on top with the bottom of the scallop on the drawn placement. Using a ruler as a guide match up the vertical line. Do this all the way up.

9. Place number on the tree as desired, keeping in mind where you want to sew the buttons onto the tree for the ornaments to hang, they can be sewn on top or below the numbers. Also, if you are using various size buttons/shapes you may want to play around with it before fusing them onto the tree.

FINISHING:

1. Pin each tear of the tree together matching the placement line. Pin each tear on the point of the scallop edge.

2. Make sure that on the back side of each tear you have some space to sew when you fold the bottom tear down.

3. Set machine up with a blind hem stitch and use the G foot. The blind hem stitch is usually found in the utility section of your machine. Refer to your manual for the stitch. You will need to set your stitch length to 3.0. Test on a scrap with batting before stitching on the project. You will need to make sure that when it takes the “bite” you can’t see the thread on the front. If so than you will need to adjust the bite by changing your width.

Picture is done with a whit thread so that you can see the stitches, use a matching thread on your project. The bottom piece is your lower tier and the upper piece is the tier on top folded down. After you have selected the stitch, the needle position on your machine should be on the left (at least that’s how it is on mine) and the first stich should be into your top tier (folded piece) then the other stitches (the straight) stitch is on the bottom tier. After sewing when you open the fabric you should not see the stitches (bite) in the front. If you do than the bite is too big, and it will need to be adjusted. Once you are satisfied with the sample then sew all the tiers up this way. Sew slowly.

If your bite is too big it will look something like this.

4. Press from the front to get the creases out from being folded.

5. Set machine up with beading foot and a Zig Zag Stitch. The width should be a little wider than the size of you pearls and length should be at 3.0. For example, the pearls I’m using is 4.0mm and I have my machine set to a 6.0 stitch width to make sure that I have enough clearance. I’m also using a clear monofilament on the top and a green matching thread on the bottom. You can use a thread that matches your beads if you don’t want to use monofilament.

You will be stitching the beads along the edges of the scallop. Start at the top of each tear and carefully going around each scallop, at the point stop with the needle on the left hand side and down in the fabric, DO NOT RAISE the FOOT pull the fabric until the edge is on the side of the fabric and the bead should be right against it, the fabric will look bunched up, continue sewing slowly and the bunched area will straighten up. Just make sure that every time the needle makes a stitch on the left it hits the fabric. Do this all the way up the tiers. When you get to the top tier start and stop at the middle upper section where the batting is exposed. Make sure that you are keeping the tiers free and not sewing them closed.

6. On the top sew the small ring to be used as a hanger.

7. Trace star pattern onto yellow felt, fold felt in half sew on drawn line all the way around. Trim back to about a 1/8” from stitching line. One the center of one piece of felt make a small slit and turn star inside out through slit.

8. Place the star on top of the tree having the sides of the star covering up the raw edges of the top tier. Sew the star in place by opening the slit and sewing the back part of the star to the tree.

9. Take a small piece of fusible web and place it on the inside of the star where the opening is located and fuse opening closed.

10. Sew buttons on to of numbers for hanging ornaments and decorate the rest of the tree with buttons and or jewels.

You can use miniature tree ornaments found in craft store also small ornaments from Dollar Tree.
