💡 Pro Tips for Sewing Denim on any Domestic V.S. Industrial Sewing Machine
- Use a sharp Jeans/Denim needle (90/14 or 100/16)
- Switch to a straight stitch or single-hole plate to prevent needle flex and deflection
- Use a narrow presser foot for precision topstitching
- Pair with AcuFeed Flex or other dual-feed feet for smooth, even fabric feeding
- Lengthen stitch to 3mm for topstitching
- Stitch slowly over bulkier seams
- Reduce bulk in thicker areas or temporarily remove belt loops in thick spots before sewing and then reattach them later
- Know the limits of your sewing machine: Domestic machine, not industrial. We have powerful domestic sewing machines these days that can handles up to ~8 layers of medium/lightweight denim (depends on thickness).
- If you are working on a computerized sewing machine and a warning appears: Stop Sewing! Turn machine off/on. Raise needle with handwheel.
- Adjust settings: Lower presser foot pressure or slightly raise foot height.
Remove the Original Jean’s Button & Tags
- Use pliers to carefully remove the existing jean short button.
- Measure the waistband from end to end.
- Also measure the width of the waistband just inside the existing jeans stitched lines.
- Using seam ripper, remove all existing tags.
Prepare the Decorative Band
- Select your favorite cotton print (small prints generally work best).
- Using a rotary cutter and ruler, cut a strip 3¼ inches wide and a few inches longer than your waistband length.
- Press the strip in half lengthwise, right sides together.
- Sew along the long raw edge with a ¼-inch straight stitch to create a tube.
- Turn the tube right side out.
- Roll and center the stitched seam to the backside; press the front flat.
- Turn in one end of the tube ¼ inch and edge stitch the end closed. Leave the other end open for now.
Attach Cotton Band to the Waistband
- Position the cotton band inside the waistband, aligning it within the existing jean stitching. Secure in place with clips or pins.
- Thread your machine with invisible polyester thread in both top and bobbin.
- Attach your Janome Machine’s favorite foot for precision top stitching and feeding.
- Lengthen stitch to 3 mm for topstitching
- Using a sharp jean’s needle and straight stitch, edge stitch slowly along one side of the band.
- Stop stitching about 6-7 inches before the end.
- If your machine struggles with bulk, seam rip the belt loops in those thicker areas and re-attach them later using a matching jean’s-weight thread.
Make the Buttonhole in the Cotton Band
- Mark the buttonhole placement on the cotton to align with the jean’s original buttonhole (about 1½ inches long in this example).
- Using your buttonhole foot attachment, sew the buttonhole in the marked area.
Finish the Band
- Trim the excess open end of the cotton band equal to the end of the waistband, leaving about ¼” to turn in and edge stitch the end closed.
- Align the two buttonholes (cotton and denim) and topstitch the remainder of the cotton band to the denim waistband.
- To complete, attach a new jean’s button or try one of those instant jean button pins!
Done! You now have a decorative, custom waistband insert for your jean shorts or denim jeans.
With a few stitches, you’ve turned simple denim into something special— Your new fold-down waistband adds personality and style to your shorts or jeans—making them one-of-a-kind.
