Accomplishing a Rolled Hem and Lettuce Edge Hem on the AirThread 2000D Serger

First you will need to set your tension according to your manual. My serger is set to 3 (Right Needle), 3 (Upper Looper), 3 (Lower Looper).

You will use three threads to make your rolled hem. For a more decorative hem you can substitute a wooly nylon cone of thread for the “Upper” looper. It adds a beautiful finish to the roll. The thread looks like hair

The following adjustments should be set on your Janome. Rolled hem setting (Pic 1), Differential Feed dial setting and the stitch length setting. (Pic 2). Right needle engaged (Pic 3) Tight setting engaged (Pic 4) *These are settings specific to your machine. Be sure to refer to your machine manual!

After the settings are set on your serger, make sure you run a test on a scrap piece of project fabric before putting your actual project in the machine. This will allow you to fine tune your settings is any are needed.

To accomplish the “lettuce edge” you will need to adjust your differential feed and stitch length to a lower or the lowest machine setting.

When serging the lettuce edge, you will stretch your fabric slightly as you serge. Don’t hold the fabric to tight but add just enough resistance until you see the result you want.

Here is my latest project using a rolled edge and a lettuce rolled edge.

Note: If you switch your settings back to regular serger settings on your machine, you will now be set to do a regular 3 thread stitch. Get good at switching back and forth!!  Now have at it and Enjoy!
