Milinda Stephenson created a gorgeous nightgown using her Janome Skyline S7 and Elna 745 serger. It is easy to create and makes beautiful photographs. This image was taken by The Carrs Photography in Dayton, Ohio.
Milinda’s beautiful nightgown takes about 20 minutes to sew. Simply gather two yards of sheer fabric and attach to a sports bra.
Janome Supplies Required
- Sports bra
- Two yards of sheer fabric
Instructions
Bodice:
- Purchase a sports bra in the proper size for the mom-to-be you are making the gown for.
Skirt:
- Measure around the largest part of your mom-to-be’s belly and multiply by two. This will be the width of fabric you will need.
- You can make the gown as long or short as you wish, simply measure from the bottom of the sports bra (your mom-to-be needs to have it on) to below the knee or ankles. Add one inch and you are ready to sew.
To Sew the Skirt Section:
- Lay out the fabric and fold in half to create a back seam.
- Serge or sew the skirt’s single back seam. You’ve now created a tube with the sheer fabric.
To Attach the Skirt to the Sports Bra:
- Choose the stretch stitch on your machine (it looks like a miniature zig-zag).
- Turn the sports bra inside out.
- Find the back center of the elastic bottom of the sports bra front and mark.
- Mark the center front of your fabric tube and pin to the center front of the sports bra.
- Find the back seam of your fabric tube and pin the top of the seam to the center back of the sports bra.
- Beginning at the back center mark, sew the sheer fabric to the bottom of the sports bra, stretching the bra elastic as much as possible as you sew. Continue all the way around, checking the fabric amount as you go. You may need to do a little tucking as you go to make the fabric even on both sides of the center marks. That is okay since the sheer material is very forgiving and will fall beautifully regardless.
To Hem the Night Gown:
- Either serge around the bottom using your rolled hem stitch or narrow hem with the sewing machine.
