There’s something magical about losing your first tooth—and what better way to add a sprinkle of charm than with a handmade quilted tooth fairy pocket? This mini envelope features a cute stuffed tooth on the back and a cozy little pocket for tucking in that tiny tooth (or a coin from the Tooth Fairy!).

  • Beginner-friendly
  • Includes printable templates
  • Closes securely with Velcro
  • Stuffed tooth for added cuteness

What You’ll Need

  • Fabric for the backpack:
    • (2) 6″ squares of outer fabric
    • (2) 6″ squares of inner fabric
    • (2) 6″ squares batting
    • (1) 4″ square of accent tooth fabric
  • Sewing basics: scissors or rotary cutter, pins or clips, hera marker, adhesive spray, ruler
  • Sewing machine – I’m using my Janome 6700p
  • Velcro – small strip (about ¾” – 1″), ideally fusible
  • Poly-fil stuffing
  • Printer for templates (included) • Iron & pressing mat

Step 1: Download & Cut Your Template

  • Use the printable templates below to cut your fabric pieces:
  • Envelope Pocket Panel: Cut 1 outer fabric, 1 lining fabric, and 1 batting
  • Envelope Back Panel: Cut 1 outer fabric, 1 lining fabric, and 1 batting
  • Tooth Appliqué: Cut 1 from scrap fabric
  • Velcro: Cut a small piece for closure

Download the templates:

Tip: You can trace the envelope shape from cardstock for durability.

Step 2: Prepare the Pocket Envelope

  1. Quilt the front and pocket panels:
    • Layer batting, outer fabric (right side up). Quilt without a backing fabric.
    • Layer lining fabric right sides together. Stitch around the edges, leaving a small turning gap.
    • Clip corners, turn right side out, and press.
    • Top-stitch all around.
  1. Attach the Tooth Appliqué
    • Pin the tooth to the outside of the back panel.
    • Stitch around the edge, using a zigzag or applique stitch, leaving an opening at the top to add stuffing. Be careful to secure it firmly since this is a 3D element.
    • Add stuffing to the tooth applique. Stitch the opening closed.

Step 3: Assemble the Pocket and add Velcro

  • Clip the pocket to the envelope body (opposite side as the tooth)and stitch the sides and bottom securely with top stitching. Leave the flap free.
  • With the envelope folded closed, mark placement for Velcro on the flap and body.
Sew or press (if fusible) Velcro pieces to each side—top of the flap and the body underneath

Final Touches

Optional: Add child’s name using embroidery or iron-on letters. Personalize with cute buttons, ribbons, or decorative stitching.

Bonus Tips:

  • Personalize with a Name: Add the child’s name under the flap or above the tooth using embroidery (by hand or machine) or fabric markers
  • Make a version without the tooth to store other treasures!
