Red, White and Blue, Moxie Party Mat

We love our pups Moxie and Daisy and are eager to make them part of our celebrations!

What better way to include them than making something cute they can use while protecting our floors in the process? I call it a win-win. From fun size to full size dogs, this dog-bone-shaped party mat will delight everyone, especially if you add something tasty to the bowl! Bonus: the project doubles as a sitting mat.

Supplies:

  • packing paper/tracing paper  21”x14”
  • marker
  • 2 fat quarters or scraps in red, white and blue
  • backing fabric and batting 21”x14” (leftover pieces from other projects are great)!
  • 50wt thread. I used invisafil and organic scanfil
  • Janome purple/red tip needle
  • iron/ironing board
  • scissors/pins (optional)
  • rotary cutter/ruler

Machine

Janome Skyline 7 (or any Janome) sewing machine with hp foot and plate.

Mat finished size: 18.5” x 12.5”

1. Draw a bone shape on the packing paper by folding paper in half on the short side. Draw on one half and cut through both layers. To extend the size of the mat simply make the straight edge longer. My sample measures 8”.  Set aside for step no. 4.

2. You can make any quilt block that you like. I chose a simple 9-patch and used smaller squares for the border (use what you have). Leftover blocks would work great. I cut each square 3”. Each 9 patch measures 8.5” unfinished.

3. The HP foot and plate make chain piecing a breeze!

4. Trace your paper cutout from step no. 1, onto batting and backing fabric and cut each shape. Trace an extra batting shape to use in the future.

5. Lay out the pieced blocks on the batting shape from step no. 4. I combined 2.5” and 3” squares for the long borders to accommodate the mat’s curves. Rows 1 and 3 (below). Sew rows together.

6. Place the batting over the pieced top, right sides together (RST).

7. Use the hp foot to carefully sew around the batting cut out, on the pieced top, without tacking the batting to the fabric. Pinning helps to keep batting from shifting. Use the stitching line to trim the bone shape.

8. The pieced top, batting, and backing shapes are now ready!

9. Layer backing and top RST. Place batting on the wrong side of the backing fabric. Stitch all around leaving a 3” gap. Reinforce the beginning and end of the stitching line.

10. Turn right side out carefully and press well. Topstitch all around for a finished look!

11. For a decorative look and to add strength, I quilted through all of the layers by selecting stitch no. 4. For additional decorative stitches, change the needle plate and foot.

12. It’s time to enjoy your creation and upcoming festivities! This delightful mat can be made for your pets, your table or adapted into a pillow by skipping the batting and adding stuffing! I hope you enjoy all of the celebrations.
