Hey sewing besties! Welcome back to the blog, and today I am sharing the perfect scrap busting project to add to diminish your stash. This is also a great gift to make for any sewist friend as well! For this project, you’ll need the following:
- Two 5”x5” squares
- One 2 ½”x2 ½” square
- One 3”x3” square
- One oval that is 4”x2 ½”
- Fluff OR cut up scraps for stuffing
Let’s get started!
Instructions:
Take the oval and fold it in half length wise and baste the edge at ¼” seam allowance. Gather to create the chicken comb and set this piece aside (Figure 1). Take the 2 1/2″ square and fold it diagonally, creating a triangle. Fold the points towards the bottom point. Fold in half again to create a triangle. This is the beak (Figure 1). Take the 3″ square and fold it diagonally, creating a triangle. Fold the triangle in half again. This is the tail (Figure 1). Pin the comb, beak, and tail to the 5″ square. Set the beak 3/4″ away from the edge on the top. On the side, pin the comb 3/8″ down the edge of the side. Set the tail 1/2″ away from the bottom of the square (Figure 1).
Place the second 5″ square on top of the pinned pieces. Sew around three edges, the side perpendicular to the comb and tail, along the top with the beak, and along the comb and tail side.
Bring the starting stitch and the ending stitch together and pin. This will make the piece look like a triangle. Stitch half the edge together, leaving a hole to turn the piece inside out (Figure 3). For stuffing, you can use leftover fabric scraps or fluff. Stuff the chicken with the fluff, leaving roughly 1″ of space for rice. You can compact the chicken more for a firmer weight (Figure 3). Fill the remaining space with rice, roughly 1/2 cup through the opening.
Sew the bottom opening closed with the machine or by hand. And that’s it! Another fun idea you can do is embroider or sew eyes, patterns, and other fun designs on the scraps so you can customize your flock as well!
That’s it! You’ll be able to bust through your scrap bin in style with this easy sewing project. Want to look at other fun scrap busting projects? Be sure to check out the other Janome Maker projects! Happy sewing, besties!
