Maker: Sandy S.
Spring is my favorite season, especially after what feels like the longest winter here in Minnesota. Hi there! It’s Sandy from Thai Charm LLC. I love sewing spring projects toward the end of winter, and what better way to welcome the season than with a Spring Table Topper? Instructions
Stitch and Flip Units (SNF)
1. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of all of the BG2 squares. Place (2) BG2 square, right sides together, on the bottom corners of (1) AC1 rectangle, matching raw edges, with the lines oriented as shown. Sew on the drawn lines, then trim off the corners ¼” away from the sewn lines.Flip the BG2 pieces away from the AC1 piece and press seams toward BG2. Repeat with all of the AC1 rectangles.
Half Square Triangles (HSTs) 2-At-A-Time Method
2. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of all of the BG1 squares from one corner to the opposite corner. Stack BG1 and AC2 squares, right sides together. Sew a ¼” seam on both sides from the drawn line. Cut along the drawn line, press the seams open, and trim to 2 ½” x 2 ½” for the tulip. Repeat with all of the BG1 and AC2 squares.
3. Use the same method as Steps 2 to make (4) BG4/L1 HST by pairing (2) BG4 and (2) L1 squares. Trim the HSTs to 3.75” x 3.75” for the leaves.
Block Assembly
4. Lay the units as shown below. Sew the BG1/AC2 HSTs together first (marked as 1). Then sew each side of the stem (marked as 2 & 3) and press all the seams open.
5. Sew the tulip bud together, followed by the stem unit, and press the seams away from the HSTs.
6. Sew all the units together and press the seams open.
7. Repeat and make the remaining 2 tulip units. Note that for the middle tulip block, the BG6 rectangle is sewn to the top of the block instead of the bottom.
Table Topper Assembly
8. Sew the table topper together by alternating between (4) sashing strips and 3 tulip blocks. Press the seams toward the sashing strips.
9. Sew the top and bottom borders to the topper first, and press toward the borders.
10. Sew the side borders and press toward the borders.
Baste and Quilt your Table Topper
11. Make the quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, followed by batting right side up, and the table topper right side up.
12. Mark two diagonal lines from corner to corner, then mark another line 1” away and parallel to the first lines.
13. I’m quilting my table topper with a classic crosshatch design, spacing the lines about 1” apart. First, I set my stitch length to around 3.5mm. I stitch the first line along the marked line with my walking foot. Then, I line up the needle with the second marked line and position the guide bar along the stitched line. By aligning the guide bar with the previous stitch line, I can eliminate the need to mark the entire top.
