Christmastime is my most favorite time of year, and I try to add something handmade to my collection of festive decor each year. This Star Garland is super simple to make, but adds such a fun touch. Add to your tree or your mantle! This garland is great anywhere.
Instructions:
Cut the following:
- (24) 6×6” squares I used 12 of my favorite Liberty prints, and cut 2 of each of those.
Press all of the squares onto your interfacing. Tip: if you are using 20” wide interfacing, go ahead and trim 2” off, and you’ll have 18” which fit three squares perfectly, and you won’t have to dodge the adhesive to avoid gumming up your iron.
Cut the interfaced squares out, and mark the right side with star template.
With wrong sides together, begin sewing around the star on the line you marked, lifting foot an pivoting at each corner. Leave open one inner segment of the star (see photo) which will be used for stuffing.
Using a small amount of fiberfill, begin to very lightly stuff the star. Don’t use much, just focus on getting the smallest amount of puff.
Place the fabric back under your machine, and stitch to close the gap in the star. This should be pretty easy to maneuver if you haven’t overstuffed! If you need to remove some stuffing, don’t sweat it!
Clip around the star. Somewhere between 1/8” and 1/4” is great here.
Repeat for the remaining 11 stars.
Now we will attach the stars to the binding. I switched to my HP foot for this part for ease of stitching. Use pins or clips to attach star points right on top of the binding. We will stitch the binding closed as we attach stars. Begin pinning your first star 9” from the end of the binding, and space the stars about 8”.
Stitch binding along the bottom, catching star points as you go.
That’s it! You are all finished.
