Hey sewing friends! I’m back with a step by step tutorial on how to make this denim zipper pouch from old jeans.
With it being Earth Day I thought today would be perfect to share this tutorial.
Here’s some supplies you’ll need:
- Old jeans
- Lining fabric
- Zipper (preferably brass)
- Topstitch thread
The pouch I’m making is going to be 9×7, so I cut four squares 10×8 to account for seam allowance. 2 for my outer pieces and 2 lining pieces.
Next, it’s time to get creative with your denim. I always love to use parts of the jeans thoughtfully so I often like to use a variety of washes, you can add a logo or one of the back pockets for fun! Using a razor blade or a seam ripper deconstruct the pieces you’d like to use.
If needed, add interfacing for structure.
For my example, I am going to add the logo to the jeans pocket and this will go on the front of the pouch. I start by stitching down the logo as neatly as possible.
Next, I place my pocket on the center front and stitch it down following the previous stitching lines. Please not that as you are topstitching, it’s wise to widen your stitch length.
Then it’s time to add my zipper. I’m using a brass zipper because it reminds me of the zipper that can be found on denim jeans. Sandwiching my lining fabric, the zipper and my outer fabric, I stitch this down at my machine using a zipper foot. Complete this on both sides. Be sure that the zipper pull is facing down towards the outer fabric.
Once the zipper is attached, press the fabric and topstitch around the zipper to keep the fabric from getting caught.
Now it’s time to sew up the bag. Right sides facing, place your denim pieces to one side and the lining pieces on the other side. Pin or clip around the outer edges, matching up edges and side seams.
Stitch at a 1/2 inch seam allowance leaving a 2-3 inch opening at the bottom of the lining side to turn right side out later.
Clip your corners. Turn the bag right side out and close up the opening in the lining. And you’re all set!
