Do your hands get cold holding your favorite pint of ice cream… even when it’s 90 degrees outside? Mine do! But not for long 🙂
This quick and beginner-friendly Ice Cream Pint Cozy is a fun way to turn a couple of leftover 10″ squares (or layer cake squares) into something both practical and adorable. It keeps your hands warm while your favorite frozen treat stays nice and cold, making it a great scrap-busting project that’s just as fun to give as it is to keep for yourself.
So grab a couple of 10″ squares, thread up your Janome, and let’s stitch something as sweet as the treat inside.
Materials (makes 1 pint cozy)
- 2 fabric squares, 10″ x 10″ (I’m making two cozies, so you’ll see four fabric squares in the photos.)
- 2 cotton batting squares, 9 1/2″ x 9 1/2″
- Coordinating cotton thread (I pulled a few of my favorite colors from my Aurifil Patchwork Companion Thread Collection.)
- Fabric marker
- Clips or pins
- Point turner
- Quilting ruler
- AcuFeed Dual Feed Foot (I always reach for my AcuFeed foot on projects like this. It helps feed all the layers evenly, so everything glides through my machine beautifully.)
Tip: Want to make your cozy microwave-safe too? Use Wrap-N-Zap batting instead of regular cotton batting. It’s perfect for both hot and cold treats.
Create the Cozy Panels
Center one 9 1/2″ batting square on the wrong side of one 10″ fabric square. Using a ruler and a fabric marker, draw two diagonal lines from corner to corner. Then draw one vertical and one horizontal line through the center of the square, as shown below. Sew along both diagonal lines.
Along the vertical center line, measure and mark 3″ down from the top edge. Then measure and mark 2 1/2″ to the left and right of the center line. Connect the three marks to create an upside-down triangle, as shown below. Fold the square in half with the right sides together, matching the marked line. Sew along the marked line, then trim the seam allowance to 1/4″. Repeat this step on the remaining three sides of the square.
Your first cozy panel is complete! Repeat the same process with the second fabric square and batting piece.
Assemble the Cozy
Place the two cozy panels right sides together, matching the seams, and secure them with pins or clips. Sew around the entire cozy using a 1/4″ seam allowance, leaving a 2 1/2″ opening along one side for turning.
Turn the cozy right side out through the opening. Take your time here… there are quite a few layers to work through that little opening! Use a point turner to gently push out the corners. (A good old chopstick works great too!)
Give the cozy a good press, then topstitch around the entire outer edge, closing the opening as you sew.
